In addition to designing Club Reach’s interiors, Antony Chan was Creative Director for key external features of The Reach residential development, such as patterned paving and decking, lighting, etched glazing, and seating that put guests’ sight-lines on the same level as the surface of the external water feature. Inside, the most striking design moves include the ceiling panel of ‘pixelated’ steel blocks in the double-height reception volume; and the delightfully elegant perspective created by the long banquette and circular tables, which ends with the ‘pumpkin’ created by the eminent Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama.

In one part of the Club Reach complex, the design of the corridors and ancillary spaces disguises the standard rectilinear floorplan in a gracefully organic way: the curves of the oak-veneered corridor walls ‘chime’ with the snaking illumination channel in the ceiling, and its light reflects on the pale marble floor. In the piano room, organic space-shaping creates cosy, acoustically superior conditions. Two other unique design features are the backlit poem, in French, and the dye-cut ‘weave’ of the brass screen behind the marble-faced desk in the spa.

The inside-outside connections in Antony’s Chan’s designs at Club Reach are epitomised by the tree-like shadows on the blinds in one of the massage rooms: the shadows are created by the etched artworks on the building’s exterior glazing. This attention to detail underlines his key aim in designing the club’s wide range of spaces: to create an aesthetic identity for Club Reach that is unique and holistic.
